Marijuana Laws for the Province of Québec

Québec Weed Stamp

Legal Age: 18

Can Have 30 Grams of Legal Dried Cannabis

Driving High Is Considered a DUI

The Basics

If you live in Québec or visiting the province, the legal age is 18 years old to smoke marijuana. Be careful, even though it’s legal, it remains illegal to offer cannabis to anyone under the legal age. You have the right to carry 30 grams of legal dried cannabis and, you can share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults in Canada. Hey, sharing is caring, I’m glad they’re using that term! Even though you can buy marijuana from stores, edibles will still remain illegal to sell.

Where to Buy Marijuana?

If you are looking for a place to buy cannabis, you can only buy marijuana products from Société Québécoise du Cannabis (SQDC). Unfortunately,  It’s against the law for private retail stores in Québec and growing cannabis plants in your household. Bummer! Isn’t it funny that, 150 grams of weed in our home but no plants! Hmmm? Thanks Québec!

As private retailer stores are not permitted, here’s the catch! If the cops catch you and you possess weed from your drug dealer, not from SQDC (has stamps) you will get severe penalties and it is considered illegal. They want to make sure citizens are buying legal medical cannabis and not getting it from the streets.

Now if you’re visiting the stores, bring your ID with you. As, they will be verifying the age of anyone who appears under 30 years old before granting you permission to the sales area. The online retail website will have an age verification process when entering the site, at the time of sale and at product delivery.

Operating a Vehicle

Québec laws state that smoking and driving is illegal and considered as driving under the influence (DUI). Therefore, driving while marijuana or other intoxicants are present in your system is dangerous to you and others. So, don’t smoke and drive! Also, while in a vehicle, if you have marijuana with you make sure it’s in a closed package and not within reach of the vehicle driver or any passenger.

Where can I Smoke?

Québec Laws has its limits. Now obviously, there are many places we can’t smoke such as playgrounds, school grounds, sports fields, childcare centers, parks and any public places. That said, for those who take the bus, be careful! The law does not allow you to smoke in bus shelters, bicycle paths, or on the grounds of Universities or Cegeps. It’s pretty simple, you can’t use a vaporizer or smoke cannabis where the law prohibits the use of tobacco.

Here’s where it hurts, if you don’t follow one of these laws, you can receive a cannabis offense which could result in a fine ranging from $2,000 to $100,000, imprisonment of 3 to 12 months, or both. Consequently, no one deserves this kind of punishment, so please make sure you follow the laws and smoke wisely!
